Simian Carbuncle are a guitar duo exploring the sonic possibilities of unorthodox techniques. Matt Clark (MC3, Larker) and regular collaborator Ade Southby (Dragons of Disgust, Cosmic Transmissions Collective) are two likeminded and exploratory improvisors regularly performing in the improvised music scenes of Brighton and London.
Adrian Southby is a multi-instrumentalist and improviser based in Brighton. His work is mainly concerned with exploring sonic possibilities using unorthodox techniques. Long standing projects Simian Carbuncle and Mutter have proved fertile breeding grounds for experimentation with prepared guitars and extended techniques.
The rule has always been “no effects”; the experiment is about what sounds we can make with the guitar on its own…
..but with preparations, so sticking a file into the pickups to make an audio click is ok. An eBow, or a volume pedal, are ok as they doesn’t affect the fundamental sound of the guitar, etc…
